Do a little - Change a lot

The road to healthy living and feeling better about yourself doesn’t start with mad bursts of exercise pushing yourself to the limit, this only leads to discouragement.

So before we go near the subject of ‘Do I need to join a Gym?’, here’s some simple steps to take first.

Drink more water, ditch fizzy drinks especially the
Diet and Low Sugar versions, which have various artificial sweeteners. At least you know what you are getting with full sugar drinks.

Cut down on Tea & Coffee, while drinking more tap water (if it’s drinkable in your area!), not easy but well worth trying. If not try cartons of orange or apple juice which count towards your five a day (pieces of fruit or vegetables).

Try to eat more of the fruit you like, whatever that may be. Cut down on your meal portion sizes and eat slower and stop when you are full.

You will be surprised as to how much better you feel by taking these simple steps.

Now for what you might think of as the hard part, regular exercise; your fitness goal depending on your current fitness level may seem far away. Don’t forget small steps and many of them climb the mountain. Perhaps that could be your goal? Write your Goal down somewhere it will help make it real!

Far more benefits than weight loss

The additional benefits that come with regular exercise aren't just limited to weight loss and body toning. There are far more, including the fact that one of your most important muscles is strengthened, that is your heart. Then your breathing improves, and you feel better more relaxed and ready to go.

If you think you were tired before exercise believe it or not you actually feel more motivated after you’ve recovered and had that shower.  You seem to gain more energy and mentally you can find yourself more creative having more enthusiasm about an hour after exercise.

Don’t waste this creative time by plonking yourself in front of the TV.  Why not investigate that idea or new job opportunity that you haven’t gotten around to doing before now.

As little as 20 minutes of moderate cardiovascular exercise three times a week can easily give the benefits above. It will be hard at first, don’t try 20 minutes in one go, in fact not even ten minutes, do 5 minutes three times a week then slowly build this up each week.

If you go for 20 minutes straight away you will easily sicken yourself and give up, so small steps it is.

Do I need to join a Gym?

No, but there is nothing wrong with the Gym if it’s financially viable and you are comfortable doing it. Of course there are lots of other roads to a healthy level of fitness.

What about Crash Diets? These aren’t a long term solution, using classes like WeightWatchers is a more measured and sustainable way of moving towards your healthy living goals.

That said Crash Diets can work to fit into that swimsuit, bikini or shorts in a hurry for your beach holiday. You won’t find any in this article because we are looking at small steps to healthy living.

What are these ‘Small Steps’?

Leave the car; walk into the town, shops or to the school when you have time.

Park furthest away from the shop you’ll walk to the supermarket quicker than the car trying to reverse into the smallest of spaces near the main entrance.

Take brisk walks as often as you can. Swim as often as you can.

Stay active take the stairs not the escalator, that’s up as well as down.

Try running! No really, start with running for a minute then walking for a minute and build it up week after week, very few of those folks out jogging started any differently.

Invest in a electric treadmill for your garage or spare room. These are great for brisk walking as well as any kind of running. It will allow you regular exercise to fit easily around your home life.

Convert your bike in the garage into the best exercise bike you have ever used by adding a piece of equipment called a turbo trainer to the back wheel. It’s simply a rolling road which gives a more realistic ride on the bike.

Try to vary your exercise, go for a swim instead of a run or brisk walk. Don’t beat yourself up missing a session and never give up. I wish you well taking those small steps, and I hope you find nothing but encouragement in this short article.

Do a little, change a lot.

Small steps achieve the big goal.
